Market Size… Marketdata estimates that the market was valued at $869 million in 2012, down slightly from $958 million in 2011. We expect a moderate 4% gain to $904 million in 2013. Growth of this niche weight loss market segment depends in large part on how NutriSystem and Medifast perform, since their sales represent 46% of the total.
Customers… Most of the diet food home delivery services’ clients skew higher female than male—60%-70% female. NutriSystem defines its core customer as a 44-year-old woman weighing 210 lbs. and who wants to lose about 60 lbs. Most clients stay on a diet plan like this 8-12 weeks and it’s common to return once or twice during the year. Some clients stay on for years.
Hot Geographic Markets...Many companies in this market focus on serving either or both New York City or Los Angeles. The other “hot spot” seems to be Florida. They became more efficient, increased marketing, and tapped into new end-user markets such as: such as seniors, vegetarians, organic foods, hospitals, corporate wellness departments, children, and cardiologists. There has been a lot of discounting and special offers of free days or weeks of food as well. Some companies have added lower-priced plans and “jump start” packages.
Profit margins...vary widely and are higher for the bigger competitors – as much as 45% of net sales.
Most of the small competitors don’t really advertise, preferring word-of-mouth and loyal long-term clients. Diet food delivery has not become a mainstream service yet, especially in rural areas, the Midwest and suburban areas, and companies see potential for future growth as the message gets out.

Food firm's failure highlights dangers machinery
To Hull bakery has been fined for safety breaches after a worker lost the tip of a finger while using a poorly-guarded machine. The 22-year-old agency worker was clearing a blockage of dough when his finger came into contact with a moving part of the machine that rounds the mixture into balls. The machine sliced off the top of his right middle finger and I later had to have the part between the tip and first joint amputated. The man, who does not wish to be named, was unable to work for three months, but has since returned Acceso Livwell Ltd bakery in Main Street, Hull, as a permanent employee.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigated the incident on 24 May 2011 and prosecuted the company at Hull Magistrates today (8 July) for failing to prevent access by workers to dangerous moving parts of machinery. The court was told that the dough machine had a gap between the bottom of a hinged guard and the top of the conveyor belt where the dough was discharged by the rounding mechanism. The man's finger had gone into the gap as he attempted to clear a blockage.
HSE found that the company's own risk assessment had identified that contact with moving machinery was a hazard. However, no additional guarding had been identified or provided. Livwell Ltd, registered at City Road, London, EC1, was fined £9,000 and ordered to pay £18,318 in costs after pleading guilty to a breach of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998.
After the hearing, HSE inspector Dr Nicholas Tosney said: "This incident was wholly avoidable." The hazards were identified but effective measures were not taken by the company to prevent access to all the dangerous parts of the machine. "The simple addition of a tunnel guard to this machine - which the company has now installed - could have saved a young man having to suffer the amputation of part of his finger." "All employers have a duty to ensure that machinery is guarded properly to ensure that their employees are not put at risk of injury."

Injury to the hand of the worker puts the food of Leeds company in court
A food-based Leeds company has been fined for security failures when a worker of the Agency had two fingers crushed by Rams of hydraulics in a sausage machine that had a broken guard. 26 Years worker, Halton, Leeds, was to remove filling for empanadas from a hopper of the machine in the excellent company of meanwood food when his fingers came into contact with hazardous moving parts.

After the hearing, HSE Rachel Brittain Inspector said: "A young man suffered very painful injury and permanent impairment in an incident which was entirely avoidable. "Excellent food company should have ensured that there were measures in place to prevent access to dangerous parts of the machine." I had warned about these risks before still failed to meet acceptable standards. "Risks to workers due to contact with machinery are well known in the food and beverage industry and ten per cent of incidents of major injuries in the sector." HSE statistics for 2010/11 show that there was a dead and more than 800 injuries in food and beverages, manufacturing industries. A further 4,000 fewer serious injuries were recorded.

Vending machine firm fined after employee falls through roof
An employee at a vending machine supplier in Skelmersdale was lucky to escape with minor injuries after he fell through a fragile roof, a court has heard. The 40-year-old from Runcorn, who has asked not to be named, had been clearing out the gutters at Paragon International Ltd, on Paddock Road, on 4 September last year when he fell approximately six metres through a roof light.
The company, which trades as Eurocup and supplies snacks and drinks for vending machines across the UK, was today (1 July 2013) prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) after an investigation found it had failed to ensure he could work safely on the roof. Ormskirk Magistrates’ Court heard the employee had been sent onto the roof to clean the guttering between two connected buildings. He was told he should try to stay away from the roof lights, but no practical steps were taken by the company to avoid this.
The employee and another worker had to carry bags of debris to the top of the roof, walking on the metal sheets between the roof lights, so that it could be collected by a forklift truck. One of the men accidentally stepped onto a roof light and fell into the accounts office below. He suffered bruising to his right side and leg, and injuries to his right hand and back.
The court was told the company should have found alternative ways of doing the work safely, such as hiring a cherry-picker or providing edging around the roof lights. Paragon International Ltd, of Paddock Road in West Pimbo, pleaded guilty to single breaches of the Work at Height Regulations 2005 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999. The company was fined a total of £10,500 and ordered to pay £3,067 in prosecution costs.
Speaking after the hearing, HSE Inspector Bradley Wigglesworth said: "The worker was extremely lucky not to have been seriously injured or even killed when he fell through the roof light. If he had fallen further along the roof then he would have landed on the concrete warehouse floor. "Paragon International knew the roof lights were fragile but he was simply told to try to avoid them, rather than any action being taken to keep him safe. The company should have carried out a proper assessment of the risks and then controlled them so that the work could be out safely. "They could have used a cherry-picker, harnesses or safety netting, but none of these were chosen. An employee’s life was put at risk as a result."

Worker crushed hand puts fresh company in court
A manufacturer of candy from Northampton has been fined for safety violations since the hand of a worker was crushed in machinery. 28 Years worker, who does not want to be named, running a machine in candy of Tilley in Thrapston on June 09, 2011, when the machine becomes clogged. He put in hand to eliminate sweets but the glove got caught on his right hand, pulling his hand in dangerous moving parts.
The man's hand was severely damaged and required several operations to straighten the tendons. It was the work of four months and it continues to have physiotherapy and struggle with the use of the injured hand. Kettering magistrates heard today (20 February) that an investigation of the health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that there was no candy Tilley protect the safety of its employees by not preventing access to dangerous parts of machinery. A guard would have prevented the incident occurs.
After the incident the HSE served a banning notice stop further work on the machine until the company put a security guard in place. Sweet Springfields, Oundle Road, Thrapston Tilley he was declared guilty of violating Regulation 11(1) of the provision and use of work equipment Regulations 1988 and they were fined £1,500 with £5.175 costs.
After the case, HSE Elizabeth Hornsby Inspector said: "This incident was traumatic for the employee and debilitating, but a simple guard would have stopped this from happening." "Organizations have the duty to protect their workers, and he will not hesitate in HSE to prosecute those who violate the law in this way."
