Kava Delfin is the first ever Restaurant & Kava Bar with a purpose. Our primary corporate purpose is to support non-profit entities that fight to protect the welfare of dolphins & whales (cetaceans) worldwide. We, as a Social Purpose Corporation, a type of Benefit Corporation under the laws of the State of Washington, plan to allocate 75% of our after tax profits to select organizations around the globe. There is nothing more important to us than the safety and freedom of cetaceans on earth. We believe our model is unique, in that we offer a chance for every one of our patrons the opportunity to support our efforts by enjoying an organic, cold-pressed juice, or by relaxing with a homebrewed Kava drink, enjoying a delicious caribbean meal, or simply stopping by to purchase any number of our products in our superfood apothecary.
The Kava Delfin founders wanted to combine their expertise, love for organic food, and deep desire to make a real change in the lives of Cetaceans worldwide. They wanted to create something that would generate funds they could provide to the most important organizations in the world that educate about and defend dolphins and whales on earth.
They also wanted a location in the world that would be surrounded by their own beliefs and principles. The founder of Kava Delfin, John Shepherd, had first spent time in Costa Rica during his elementary school years at the Cushman School in Miami, Florida. He was fortunate to have a chance to spend his spring break on a educational school trip to Costa Rica. The tour company was Costa Rican Adventures, and was the passion and creation of Stephen Brooks, the owner and founder of Punta Mona Center for Sustainable Living & Education, an 85 acre off the grid, family owned environmental education center, botanical collection, permaculture farm and eco-lodge, dedicated to sustainable ways of living.
John fell in love with Costa Rica then, and travelled back many times over the following 16 years, once almost purchasing a 50-Acre macadamia farm. The trip to Costa Rica, led by Stephen Brooks, changed John's life forever, and set him on a path that would lead him to a dedication to organic farming, sustainability, and a desire to educate the world on conservation and deep ecology.
The decision was made, and the plan set in motion, a Restaurant & Kava Bar on the southern Caribbean coast of Costa Rica that would be a prototype location, and a launching pad for the Kava Delfin brand worldwide.
Kava Delfin is named for the "pacific elixir" called Kava Kava, and the spanish word for dolphin, Delfin. We are Kava Delfin!
"With every action, Kava Delfin will strive to fulfill its purpose of increasing the flow of capital to non-profit entities whose sole purpose is safeguarding the life and freedom of Cetaceans on earth, ending Cetacean captivity, and preserving all marine ecosystems worldwide." -John M. Shepherd III, Founder
